There many bands that decide to follow the hard long road of progressive metal music during the last years… another example is Mirrormaze that are coming from Italy… and they seem to have a special love for progressive metal/rock music. Having influences from Dream Theater, Fates Warning, Symphony X, Evergrey, Pink Floyd, Yes, Rush, Planet X, Angra, Nevermore, Darkology among others… they like to embellish their sound with some easier, straightforward alternative vocal melodies… without escaping the progressive genre in the end.

There’s a guest appearance by Fates Warning’s vocalist Ray Alder… something that anyone can understand from the very first minutes of the song. The album was mixed and mastered by Staffan Karlsson (Stevie Wonder, Earth Wind & Fire, Roxette, Firewind) at Landgren Studios 5.1, Sweden… but I’m not overall satisfied as there’s room to be better, tighter and heavier… especially on the guitars and the drum sound. Not bad though… but not great as well.

Mirrormaze have nice ideas… and songs like: “Vicious Circle”, “Deeper Signs”, “Walkabout” & “Missing” are working better in my opinion. They’ve got quite a way to go… they can actually play really well… but they must also add more personal elements to their sound and get rid of some overdone prog metal clichés of the genre. Nonetheless, the prog metal freaks better keep an eye on them…
