Lahmia
Into the Abyss
Bakerteam Records
2012
This is the case where an underground band that has caused fuzz around its name… not only manages to make the next step but also succeeds. Lahmia are coming from Italy and they managed to release their first demo, “An Eternal Memory”, back in 2007. A year later they released their EP “Forget Every Sunrise”, which got several great reviews from the press and helped the band gain more reputation. After almost two years, in 2010, they entered the Outer Sound studios in Rome, Italy and started working on their debut’s pre-production.
The album was finally recorded and mixed by Giuseppe Orlando (Novembre, Valkiria, Necrodeath, Stormlord, Stigmhate, DGM, Kaledon etc.) and mastered by the renowned Jens Bogren (Paradise Lost, Amon Amarth & Katatonia among others) at Fascination Street Studios in Orebro, Sweden. Moreover, the cover and inner artwork was designed by Niklas Sundin (Dark Tranquility, In Flames, Sentenced, Arch Enemy, Andromeda, Charon, Eternal Tears of Sorrow and so on). The guys chose to co-operate with some of the best music producers & graphic designers out there and the final outcome is just excellent in any part. That’s the way you gotta think and act if you wanna distinct yourself from the thousands other bands that are around. Thankfully, Bakerteam records signed the band and their debut album is out lastly… also having a strong support by the label.
In the music part… Lahmia have various influences from almost all the metal genres… a dark & extreme background… and some melancholic, doom & atmospheric passages. You will hear melodic, heavy, thrash, power, death, black, atmospheric, doom & extreme metal both influenced by the European and the US scene. The enthralling thing here is how beautifully they have blended all these elements… and they have presented something that has the band’s personality… rather than copy any other bands. That’s something that you do not find in most of the releases of our time. All the performances are actually great but I must refer to the singer, Francesco, who does all the vocals… and I mean the growls, the brutal, the screams & the clean ones. He’s miraculous indeed. The album also contains three songs, “Nightfall”, “Grinding Dreams” & “Glass Eyed Child”, from the debut that were re-recorded & re-arranged.
Whether you prefer the melodeath side of the Swedish (European) scene or the US heavier, more extreme black/death one… it’s true that in Lahmia’s debut you will enjoy both sides in that very successful blending. Try ‘em out and be sure that you’ll be surprised nicely. “Into the Abyss” is one of the best heavy, extreme & melodic metal debuts of the last years. Lahmia has the character, the inspiration and the motivation to go all the way.
