Kalidia
Lies’ Device
Independent Release
2014
Coming from our neighboring country Italy, this newcomer started out only 4+ years ago. In the meantime they managed to release an EP, “Dance of the Four Winds” in 2012 and now they present their debut full-length release.
Kalidia is a female fronted power metal band in general. Their music also has various symphonic, heavy metal & even (very few) extreme (modern) metal elements. I guess that ain’t much of a shock especially in today music industry where the female-fronted metal bands are more than ever! The album’s production, which has been done by Alessio “Tom” Lucatti (Vision Divine, Etherna), who also did the mixing & mastering, is good but a bit “weak” at places, like the drums or even the rhythm guitars. A fuller sound would have been somewhat better but as I said earlier it is good on the whole. There’s always place for progression in every part though.
The band’s music approach follows the classic & overdone power, symphonic metal formula. Even if the singer, Nicoletta, is a pretty lady, that’s not enough to give ‘em an extra boost. There are also two guest appearances on the album by Andrea Racco (Etherna, Opening Scenery) on “Harbinger of Serenity” and Alessio on the last track “In Black and White”. Kalidia need to work harder, especially on the songwriting part, and take advantage of Nicoletta’s voice as well as her looks. Certainly there are fine moments here but if they actually want to achieve something more, they need to vastly avoid the clichés of the genre and try harder on every part. “Lies’ Device” is a little nice debut work… but exactly now is when the tough thing gets going…
