Michael Stanley is a musician/songwriter that has been at it since the late 60s, either as part of various bands, or going on as a solo artist opening for some of the biggest names in the business (ie Springsteen, The Eagles and so on) and also collaborating with an impressive pedigree of musicians in the process… having gone solo since some time he uses his road band, “The Resonators” to craft another album probably his twelfth or so, after another dozen ones as “Michael Stanley Band” and a couple of other solos predating those, with any other bands either being prior or in the midst of all that… quite a career, eh?!

Michael Stanley’s style, is a rootsy rock, often described as “heartland” rock, definitely a nice piece of Americana, that sounds not to dissimilar to what a mix between the more straightforward moments of Tom Petty would, with a bit of The Doobies and The Eagles thrown in and he has legendary producer/engineer Bill Szymczyk (Eagles, B.B.King, Joe Walsh, The James Gang, The Who and Santana) at the helm, an oft collaborator since his 70s days to make sure his music gets the right sort of finish to come across as contemporary but at the same time timelessly classic.

“And Then…” contains some twelve new Stanley compositions and a cover of Storyville’s “Good Day for the Blues”. All of them are purposeful, almost four decades of “doing this”, guarantee that the man’s writing is refined and perfected as it can be and if you like the “sound” described above, it’s almost certain you’re gonna love this. Quite recommended I’d say.
