Epitaph
Crawling Out of the Crypt
High Roller Records
2014
It’s to wonder how many “old and underground” bands have revived in this era, crawling out of their crypts indeed! This time it’s Epitaph, a late 80s Italian doom metal band which managed to release their desirable debut full-length album in 2014! The band had released 3 demos back in the day till they got off the music map after 1994. Now, 20 years later, they are back with their debut. I guess they should be glad about that.
The album features “old material” (probably left in some tapes from the old days) which has been re-worked by the band. They have brought the ideas, the riffs, the way of thinking and writing formula of the 90s into the 10s… but somewhat updated and with a better sound. By the way, the production is a bit “dry”, good on the whole with some 90s touches but without being outdated at any point.
Without bringing anything new on the table, they honor their doom metal roots. Personally, I do not fancy that “theatrical-wannabe” vocals but that’s a point of view from a guy who’s not into doom metal music. Anyhow, it would be interesting to see how the band will move from now on. The first goal has been achieved with the release of the debut album. I’m sure they do know that nowadays it’s easier to release an album but quite hard to sell it to the fans… in the old days it was the opposite in a way…
