NDH, industrial/gothic Germany band Oomph! played their only UK show from the Ritual Tour, last Tuesday night at the O2 Academy Islington in London. The band was formed back in 1989 and pioneered the Neue Deutsche Härte (NDH) movement. Since their formation there have been no line-up changes (Dero, Flux and Crap), except for temporary personnel for live performances. Their continuity and consistency have been synonymous with self-renewal, pioneer spirit and carefree creativity for almost three decades.
Hardly a band has ever influenced the German musical scene so deeply and keeps it heavily fascinated! Oomph! combine many music style such as metal, industrial, alternative rock/metal, electronica and gothic to create their sound. Their style changed over the years, especially from their first album, which was released in 1992; though they started with very much a dance-laden industrial sound, they quickly moved to a much more heavily guitar-driven metal sound.
After receiving a lot of tempting offers from different record labels, they decided to sign with Napalm Record earlier this year; as consequence of it, at the beginning of this year they released their new album “Ritual”, which is their most aggressive, heaviest and darkest album in a while.
The band is very happy and proud of the album and they stated that it is 100% Oomph!. This time around they decided to write, produce and mixed everything by themselves in their own recording studio; and to make it even more aggressive and intense, they decided to write all the lyrics in German. Also, the album artwork brilliantly supports the mystical character of the songs and lyrics and leave plenty of scope for everyone own imagination.
The atmosphere in the room is amazing, everyone is super excited to see these guys live. As soon as they hit the stage an enormous energy and pathos comes out from them. There are brilliant to watch and don’t fail to surprise me! The interaction with the audience is also amazing and a plus.
Their support for the EU part of the tour is German Rock band Heldmaschine. Another great band with engaging energy. They have already released four studio albums, a live double album and most recently a live DVD and now everyone is thinking what else to expect from them.
They entered the stage all dressed in black vests with blue led lights on. And that was super cool! They brought a lot of fans with them. The audience started to have fun from the very first moment. Fountains of fog are all in between their songs with a constant changing of lights from blue to red and to white. Everyone is dancing and partying, and it is such a nice thing to see.
I’m very happy I had the chance to take part to all this and I hope they will be coming back to the UK soon! Also do yourself a favour and catch them live wherever and whenever you can!
