Rhope is a newcomer from Italy which presents its debut album entitled “Turning Maybes Into Reality”. The press info says that Rhope’s music can be described as a great mix of heavy metal, rock and stunning melodies… I will not entirely agree with this description… I would better say that Rhope are being influenced by bands like: In Flames, Soilwork, Metallica, Dark Tranquility, SOAD etc… and have blended all those different sounds in their music. A little heavier with brutal vocals at times… then again more melodic with clean vocals… fine performances but lack of originality and inspiration. The fact that the CD lasts for over one hour, is making it kind of boring in the end.
The album was mixed by Diego Minach and Tancredi Barbuscia and mastered by Tom Baker (Deftones, Nine Inch Nails, Marilyn Manson, Rob Zombie, Sevendust) at Precision Mastering in Los Angeles… nevertheless, the overall sound is way too compressed, modern and sharp for my liking. It’s actually good and those who like that kind of modern/over-compressed production will like it.
This album has its moments but the guys must try harder if they wanna compete with the abovementioned bands… but if they wanna be in the second league of that music then it’s OK to continue without trying to better up. Every review (if it doesn’t serve any other purposes) must help the band (when reading it) to understand which are those things they must keep, improve or get rid of, in order to move on. Those who believe they are perfect but some magazines or webzines have only misjudged them, have no future not only in music but in general. This is just a debut that’s entering the band into the metal music scene… the next steps are up to them… so the next album will show the way…
