Preacher is a Scottish 8-piece band which was formed in 2007. “Signals” is the band’s debut which had been in the making for almost 7 years and it has quite a “strange” story behind it. The band’s mastermind, vocalist & guitarist Martin Murphy suffered a severe stroke almost 7 years ago. All this near death experience made him focus on other life priorities but also “inspired” him to write the lyrics and the music for “Signals” as soon as he left the hospital. Also the band had to replace their lead guitarist due to health issues, a place which was initially covered by Martin’s son Greg Murphy, who impressively went from guitar hero novice to self-taught virtuoso in a span of 16 months.
“Signals” is an album heavily influenced by Pink Floyd. The band’s music can be described as progressive psychedelic rock with lots of atmospheric passages. Their music comes from the heart and it does have a rather pure feeling all over it. The production is smooth & clear. The album was produced, engineered, mixed and mastered by Larry Primrose.
I tend to like the atmospheric tracks of the album better and especially the instrumental “Arrival” and the soft-atmospheric “I’ll Be There”. The keyboard solos on some tracks are adding an effective diverse feeling to them. Very good ideas indeed. “Signals” will totally bring the “golden days” of Pink Floyd on your mind but it also does have something personal from its composer (Martin) which gives it a somewhat individual character. I’m sure that those personal elements will be even more in their next album and the band will be a bit freer from their Floyd-craze… cuz’ they do have various nice things to offer and they need to follow their own road eventually.
