Plenty was formed back in 1986. The founding members were Tim Bowness (No-Man, solo, etc.), Brian Hulse and David K Jones. Three cassette releases appeared between 1987 and 1988, and it was in 1990 when the band took a big hiatus till 2017, when Tim, Brian and David started re-recording the band’s 80s catalogue of 16 tracks, plus a new one, so as to complete their debut official release.
Hence, 30+ years later, they guys managed to release “It Could Be Home”, a full-length debut album made in the 80s and put out in the late 10s. Another “strange” music story, which remind us of the “never say never” quote.
The album’s music is reminiscent of the late 80s music era (and how couldn’t it?!), but with a fresh sound; musically there’s a blending of post-punk, ambient & dream pop along with lots of electro and atmospheric elements. The tracks are mostly slow, mellow and soft; the album mostly has a slow tempo, if we take out “Hide” that is the only up-tempo track and one of the best tracks here.
“It Could Be Home” was mixed and instrumentally augmented by Norwegian producer Jacob Holm-Lupo (White Willow, The Opium Cartel), and mastered by The Pineapple Thief’s Steve Kitch. The album also features contributions from former Plenty guitarist Michael Bearpark, pianist Peter Chilvers (Brian Eno, Karl Hyde) and No-Man violinist Steve Bingham.
Those who like Tim’s solo stuff or his band No-Man, can also try out “It Could Be Home”, especially if they fancy the electro, post-punk, ambient & dream pop music of the late 80s.
