Maya
The Prophecy is Broken
Underground Symphony Records
2015
You’re damn right, The Prophecy is Broken… I mean initially, the world was to end in 2003, then when that didn’t happen they said 2012 and we’re still here… that’s a broken prophecy alright! Don’t give much regard to all the bad jokes I used to introduce this review.
Maya is an Italian quintet and while they have been a going concern for some four years now, they are only debuting now. They seem to have changed vocalists as well as recent as last year, so I take it that it’s only then they properly took it to record the tracks for their debut.
Their style, is largely progressive, but they have the occasional solo that’s a bit more straightforward, here and there, so that keeps them from being branded a hardcore prog band, although the balance in their compositions lies beyond lyrical power metal and closer to prog. In a way they reminded to me bands like Athena and Time Machine, with a rougher singer, but still an aptitude for the style. Without managing to really stand out, they do seem promising, but they’d need to get their singer to really up his game and improve his accent, slightly. While he’s not one of the worst offenders, this last month, accent wise, there’s definitely room for improvement in his pronunciation. Fan of the above bands, would do well to check them out, since songs like “Spirit”, “The Prophecy is Broken”, “The Chosen Ones” and “Deja Vu” leave enough promise for the future.
