Even though they announced that with this album they introduce a “new order”, if I can recall well, all we got was one of the same in the end. They have a specific songwriting formula they use the last few years, so I do not believe that anyone would expect any kind of surprises or new things. They said that this album has been influenced by the old Italian horror movies and bands like Goblin. That’s understandable but apart from that “Broken Crown Halo” is still a “typical Lacuna Coil album”.
Even though I feel it’s slightly better than “Dark Adrenaline”… eventually it kinda becomes tiresome and dull. Cristina sounds as sexy as always but it takes more than that to create something really good. I think that Lacuna Coil have been in automatic pilot for some years now and that won’t work for their own shake at long last. The “weird departure” of their long-time guitarist, Cristiano “Pizza” Migliore & drummer Cristiano “Criz” Mozzati is another reason to suspect that something’s broken here. Anyhow the production is superb as always. The album was produced by producer Jay Baumgardner (P.O.D., Sevendust, Evanescence, Papa Roach) and engineer Kyle Hoffmann (P.O.D., Bush, Zebrahead) and mastered by Howie Weinberg (Rammstein, Soundgarden, Nirvana, Deftones, Pantera etc.). Without any doubt when you have lots of fans and a major label behind you it’s hard not to accomplish the best sound results. That’s the damn truth.
When all's said and done, “Broken Crown Halo” leaves a bad taste in somebody’s mouth. It’s very predictable, done by the book, wannabe commercial & insipid gothic, alternative, modern metal album. It’s drives one mad to think that bands like Lacuna Coil are enjoying fortune & fame while others which are better in every aspect, are struggling to make it. I guess the music industry should be among the top 3 uneven, unfair & deceptive industries in the world. So be it! The crowds will always be manipulated by those who have the power… that’s a damn principle!
