Three years after the release of their “Green Mosquito” EP, Perth, Australia based Jupiter Zeus released their full length album entitled “On Earth”. This record is not the kind that goes unnoticed. Dark, emotional and powerful, but with just a few shiny and somewhat cheerful moments (take “Talkback Caller” for example), this record is jam packed with some incredibly tight melodies that combine stoner and psychedelic rock with sludge metal.

It’s very evident how much work went to each and every one of the 11 tracks here. Songs like “Over”, “Cosmic Rays”, “Psychotic Seeds” and “Co-Creators” don’t just take inspiration and talent, no that’s just 50%. They require hard work and hours upon hours of practicing, rehearsing recording. Coming up with a tight guitar riff is one thing, writing a complete song around it (figuring out the right sound or writing the bridges and the breaks which will compliment it the most), now that’s a whole different ball game all together. What we have here is an all-around well-planned and well executed, complete album.

On a final note, I’d like to say that while energetic hard-rocking songs like the pre-mentioned “Psychotic Seeds” and “Co-Creators” are great and all, I find that a band’s true musical worth can be judged by their slow-jam attempts. I already mentioned the almost cheerful “Talkback Caller”, but apart from that, there are also two pretty tight modern-sounding power ballads with which “On Earth” concludes, “Waiting in a Line” and “State of Mind”. Gentle and powerful, these tracks make it abundantly clear that Jupiter Zeus know how to write good music.

So, in short, if you’re on the look-out for a tight, dark and powerful psychedelic/space/doom rock record, look no further, “On Earth” is the album for you.
