Hypnotheticall is an Italian prog rock/metal band that has been around since 1999. Having suffered various line-up changes through the years, “A Farewell to Gravity”, is their newest & sophomore album. This time they have a new vocalist, Marco Ciscato and a new keyboardist Davide Pretto.
Blending prog metal (PoS) together with modern alternative elements (Tool/APC ), psychedelic prog rock features (Porcupine Tree/Riverside) and various King crimson/Floyd-like atmospheric passages, they present a well-crafted prog rock/metal mixture. I haven’t heard the band’s debut, so I can’t make any comparisons but the fact that they’ve got a new singer means that they might have changed their music approach somehow.
“A Farewell to Gravity” contains some heavy prog songs that, I’m not, personally, very fond of and some mellower/atmospheric ones that work truly well. I think, the production doesn’t help the overall outcome very much cuz’ it’s a bit raw. It’s OK but an updated and dynamic sound would have been way better imo. That’s why the album is a bit uneven.
Songs like: “Drifting Dreamers”, “First Draft of a Life”, “Crisis” & “Hiranyaloka” are showcasing what the band is capable of and it is there where they must focus on in the next releases, if you ask me. “A Farewell to Gravity” has quite a few fine moments that are worth giving this album a shot. They can do better and let’s hope they do so in the years to come…
