Huntress is a band with some similarities to bands like Kobra And The Lotus primarily and to a lesser extend Leather, Crystal Viper, Hysterica and Battle Beast. Their singer Jill Janus appears in titillating, suggestive poses, with other females in various states of undress… when their by the numbers classic influenced but to “clean” heavy metal doesn’t need all that…
They seem to have a rather unsteady membership when it comes down to drums and bass with several members departing beside the duo of Janus and the lead guitarist and with three albums alone they did manage to secure quite a few bizarre support slots, unlikely for a non established band on the large roster of a label such as Napalm Records (ie Megadeth). Of course Janus was posting various bizarre photos on social media, like suggestions that she shaved her genitalia on the sinks intended for the headliners and such other petty and pitiful shenanigans. The idea of a middle aged performer with plastic knockers in an one-piece trying to desperately get attention feels pathetic really. It’s not as she’s even pretty, she looks more like a divorcee gone wild or some mentally unstable & mannish looking stripper.
At any rate, passed the first couple of numbers, “Sorrow” and “Flesh” that are pretty decent for a typical “meat and vegs” heavy metal, but the album soon proves to be a one trick pony that becomes more and more boring and stagnant with each passing song. Especially when the band tries to sound more melodic like on “Noble Savage”, which ain’t a Virgin Steele cover, it really only takes a turn for the worse… with maybe only “Fire in My Heart” and “Black Tongue” (not a cover again), which is however a bonus, being remotely interesting after that. A case of a you‘ve heard the single and you‘ve heard it all, Huntress is a poseur band that really is sad on many levels. And obviously they do get tons more attention than some excellent Scandi prog power or some excellent American bands, which literally obliterate them musically. Tits and Ass metal… it is then. Old plastic ones. Even worse than those female fronted “occult rock” bands which keep popping up like mushrooms. Yeah 4 decent songs should land you a…
