Helheim
raunijaR
Dark Essence Records
2015
Four years after “Heiðindómr ok mótgang”, the Norwegian black metalers Helheim are back with their new album. The pagan black metal from this band is still here… extreme, dark, paganistic with atmospheric and Viking elements throughout.
Possibly “raunijaR” is a bit more experimental as an album and the clean vocals by Vgandr will surely give a different allure to the final result. There are also two guest vocalists the one is Pehr Skjoldhammer (Alfahanne) and the other is William Hut. The album was recorded at Conclave & Earshot Studio with Bjornar Nilsen and it was mastered by Herbrand Larsen (Enslaved). The production has that specific Scandi subtle, dark & dry sound that the Northern black metal bands mostly have.
“raunijaR” features “Åsgards Fall III” (12:25) & “Odr” (10:27), both of which are the longest tracks the band has ever recorded, if I’m not mistaken. The album features only 5 tracks and lasts around 41 minutes. I’d like to see how the loyal fans of the band will react to the clean vocals and the experimental Viking/pagan mid-tempo nature that all the tracks have on this album. In a nutshell, “raunijaR” addresses the band’s longtime fans that are a bit open-minded and accept music alterations in general…
