Doug Wahlberg has been into rock music for as long as he can remember and he has given numerous live shows throughout his music career. Then again, some may say that the debut album by Doug Wahlberg Band has delayed for quite some time. The last piece of the puzzle was the keyboardist & guitarist Jeff Claypool. When Jeff joined the band, Doug said that they finally started working on their debut release. The other two members of the band are the bassist George P. Miller (Robby Krieger, John Densmore, Chicago Loop) and the drummer Rich Genovese (Secret Service).

The motto “a modern approach to a retro sound” describes the music of this album exactly. I couldn’t have said it better. Indeed the album’s classic rock, pop-rock & acoustic rock music of the 70s/80s has a modern touch and sound overall. The CD was digitally recorded and in part on 2-inch tape. The first 4 tracks, “Love When it Rains”, “What If”, “Nothing” and “Torture” were mixed and mastered by Peter Hodgson (Deep Purple, Gary Moore etc.). The other 4 tracks of the album: “The Lake”, “Broken”, “Waiting on the Sun” and “Can’t Wait” were recorded and produced at Moomba Studios by Michael Patzig (Michael Bolton etc.). The production is contemporary and crystal clear.

“Flying Under the Radar” won’t only gratify those old rockers who search for good old rockin’ music with a contemporary twist but also the young ones who have got sick of those “retro” acts of today, which sound so fake and wannabe, and would like to listen to a rock album that has an updated sound while not trying to mimic the sound & style of the 70s & 80s bands. This is a genuine rock album with various pop-rock elements and some truly fine melodies. I think it’s time for the Doug Wahlberg Band to stop “flying under the radar” and get the attention they deserve…
