Deep Sun is a Swiss band that originally started working together some ten years ago or so, only to suffer so many like up changes to nowadays only feature one member from that early lineup, who even went by the name of “1 Hour” back in the day. Many lineup changes and a name change later with again most of the musicians changing in between 2009 and 2011, the band came to its current formation that has been solid ever since.

Current singer Debora Lavagnolo has a nice voice that’s agile enough to deal with both operatic moments but also gracefully switch over to some more contemporary lows. She sounds a bit like Tarja did, when she finally started singing well enough toward the end of her tenure with Nightwish and first few solo albums (which were terribly boring material wise however). The band, led by the sole original member guitarist Eros Di Prisco, sounds a bit like a transitional Nightwish circa “Century Child” and “Once” but not necessarily going in an overtly symphonic direction, but keeping the metal orchestrations pretty “metallic”. The many years of “prep” has afforded most of the members to gel together, so this their “debut” sounds already pretty crystallized in terms of style and direction.

From the excellent opening title track to the more shuffled core of the album and right to the end, the band manages to keep the listener quite engaged and not repeat themselves, which is pretty rare in today’s overpopulated and largely unoriginal scene. Definitely one worth checking out and keeping an eye on.
