Beverly Killz
Gasoline & Broken Hearts
Perris Records
2012
I truly fancy this band’s name… it takes me back to the 90s when the guys of my age used to watch the Beverly Hills TV series. Wow, it brings some memories back… and the Killz with the “z” instead of Hills it’s kinda hilarious. Hence, it wasn’t so hard to guess the music style of the band. Hmm, it would surely have some 80s hard rock, sleaze, hair metal influences… and I wasn’t wrong at all… with the exception of a modern and updated sound of the band.
Having been formed in 2007 from the ashes of Jasmine Gun and Mr. Jackfrost, these Italians gave many shows before they decided to record their first EP in 2009, entitled “Straight from Underground”, which was mixed & produced by the known artist and producer Alessandro Del Vecchio (Edge of Forever, Moonstone Project, Axe, Eden’s Curse). Now, after signing with the US Perris records, they’re presenting their debut album. I like how these guys have a specific vision of their music and try to cooperate with some very known producers so as to deliver the goods. This time, it was the renowned Dennis Ward (Pink Cream 69, Unisonic, Place Vendome, Angra, House of Lords, Krokus etc.) that mixed & produced the band’s debut album. The final outcome is very good and dynamic.
On the music part, the guys do pay their tribute to the 80s hard rock music, as I said earlier, with elements from Guns N’ Roses, Skid Row, Motley Crue, L.A. Guns, Crashdïet & Aerosmith among others. They do not retain so many sleaze/glam elements but they stay true to melodic hard rockin’ music mostly. The album is fine and the guys play well… but the major problem with this kind of releases is to separate yourself from the thousands of other competitors & deliver something actually mind-blowing, which is a very hard thing to do. The last band which did such a thing was Crashdïet and the issues they faced afterwards marked the beginning of their end. The recognition & the burden of success were too much to be handled properly. Anyhow, Beverly Killz are a cool band with an even cooler name that play hard rock music with passion and dedication… listen to them and you’ll see that they are better than some wannabe primary hard rock bands of our time…
