Steve Thorne
Crimes & Reasons
Giant Electric Pea
2012
Steve Thorne is an old known fellow to Grande Rock… meaning that we had the pleasure to present this debut here back in 2005 when he was making his first steps to discography. Since then Steve has released 3 more full-length works including the latest one “Crimes & Reasons”.
Steve still enjoys his loneliness when it comes to songwriting and recording… without meaning that he does not need any music friends… who doesn’t after all? Here you will find some great guest appearances like: the bassist Tony Levin (Peter Gabriel, King Crimson), the keyboardist/songwriter Martin Orford (ex-IQ, solo – he plays the flute… so glad to see him back in action), the vocalist/guitarist Gary Chandler (Jadis), the drummer Nick D’Virgilio (Genesis, ex-Spock/s Beard) & the drummer Bob White. Not bad at all huh?
Steve’s music is more mature and melodic, with some melodic rock & pop-rock features, nowadays without losing that prog, atmospheric background. Having as a guide the less complicated & more tuneful aspects of Marillion, Pendragon, Spock’s Beard, Porcupine Tree, It Bites, Arena and IQ… Steve manages to deliver amazingly beautiful songs such as: “Crimes & Reasons”, “Everything Under The Sun” (such a smooth and pensive track), “Moth To Flame” (an amazing atmospheric melodious prog rock tune), “Blue Yonder” (what a splendid mellow song), “Making Plans”, “Modern Curse” & “Distant Thunder”. The guest musicians, by adding their personal touches to each song, are making the entire result even more enjoyable. The production is very clear and rich… excellent by any means.
Would it have been too much to say that this is his strongest effort thus far? I’ve listened to this album so many times and still can’t escape the delightful warm pictures it creates when you dive into it. If you like prog rock music… being more melodious with several melodic rock & pop-rock passages then “Crimes & Reasons” will surely make your day…
