John Petrucci - Terminal Velocity

I suppose I was lucky enough, age wise, to start listening to rock and metal in the early 90s, hence capturing the Dream Theater phenomenon pretty much from the very beginning. Top notch musical chop by some guy straight out of a prestigious musical school could be expected, but the sort of creativity, artistic merit and maturity that they displayed early on, was really an eye opener and what set them apart from many of their contemporaries.

Dream Theater - The Astonishing

Dream Theater have teased their fans for a while about the release of a new album, first with the “announcement” of two factions, on their website, in a rather cryptic front-page post and then with an actual announcement and a promotional video of a double disk featuring some 130 or so minutes of music and some grand concept about a band of rebels, standing defiant against an oppressive empire with music playing an important role, in their “resistance”.

Dawn - Darker

It may have taken them 7 years to come up with the second full-length album but these Swiss guys do know exactly what they are up to. Having a limitless adoration for the 70s era and for bands such as: Genesis, Yes, King Crimson, Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull, Kansas, Gentle Giant, ELP, Camel, etc., Dawn can be placed on the neo-retro or neo-vintage (if there’s such a thing) ‘movement’ of our time.
