Richie Kotzen
Cannibals
Headroom-Inc
2015
Richie Kotzen needs no special introduction as he is already a very successful and celebrated guitarist, songwriter and vocalist. He has played with Poison and Mr. Big and he recently formed Winery Dogs along with the fabled bassist Billy Sheehan and the eminent drummer Mike Portnoy.
Richie’s newest solo work dives deep into the late 70s/early 80s music era. It’s full of soul, funky, disco-pop, soul-jazz, funk-rock and pop-rock music. Assuredly, that musical combination might sound a bit “weird” to the ears of the fans who prefer Richie’s “more electric side” but before you draw any conclusions, I’d suggest you give it a go first. Yeah, it still sounds “strange” to me every time I play it but it’s been done well and that’s obvious as you keep listening to it. Richie is an incredible musician and he couldn’t have delivered something inharmonious or unlistenable.
Apart from anyone’s musical preferences, one thing is for sure… this album is quite fun even though it may sound a bit odd to the traditional rockers. “Cannibals” is a solid album overall and the performances are simply great. I know that it might be hard to “digest” for those who like more rockin’ things – but none can blame it for not having a music quality… beauty, as always, is in the eye of the beholder…
