People say “don’t judge a book by its cover”… and I’ll agree to that. But sometimes when the cover reflects the musical content then the blending is simply stunning! So, why I’m I saying all these things? Because this is how I felt when I listened to “Mangolia” for the first time. I was overtaken by the ethereal album cover… but when the music came along, I was left breathless.
The Pineapple Thief are auspiciously on their 15th year of existence. Their experience, the knowledge from their previous works and their ability to assimilate the stimulus of their time, all have played a significant role so as to create this album. Apart from very few intense moments, “Magnolia” is a smooth, atmospheric, anthemic, esoteric, emotional, artistic and imaginative album at large. It may be pretty emotive but it doesn’t become depressive or melancholic at any point. It does exhale a rather positive, bright and animated feeling all the way (from start to finish). The incredibly slick, clear and full production is another plus on the album. The mixing has been done by the well-known mix-engineer Adam Noble (Placebo, Paul McCartney, Robbie Williams etc.).
The album contains 12 tracks, which means around 46 minutes of music. Bruce is giving some great performances on vocals and guitars, along with the other guys… but most spectacular are the orchestrations which are very smart, full and extra detailed. There are not “loose” moments here and the melodies are properly memorable overall. It won’t be easy to resist the sensitive allure of tracks such as: “Simple as That”, “Alone at Sea”, “Don’t Tell Me”, “Magnolia”, “Seasons Past”, “Coming Home”, “The One You Left to Die”, “Sense of Fear” & “A Loneliness”. But it’s not only that! They saved the best for last! “Bond” is an astonishing song by any means! Closing, all I can say is that “Magnolia” is not only The Pineapple Thief’s most complete, emotional and grand moment to date but also one of the top albums for 2014…
