Soulfly

The band’s previous album “Enslaved” was actually a good one and I was pretty favorable towards the band. It wasn’t something extraordinary (wow how many years have passed since Max released something truly superb?!), but it had its moments. Now a year later Soulfly are back with a new album and I can say that they were a bit hasty on this occasion. You see it ain’t that they are so full of ideas and they cannot keep it in their pants… but they honestly do not know when to cease for their own sake our course. Fault No1.
Hence, what’s the new member on the band’s camp this time? It’s Max’s youngest son Zyon who’s the band’s full-time drummer. Other guest appearances on the album include: Igor Cavalera (Lody Kong), Jamie Hanks (I Declare War), Neil Fallon (Clutch) and Mitch Harris (Napalm Death). OK we’ve got it. Max’s trying to pass the music legacy to his sons and get his fans like ‘em and follow them as well. I’m not really into nepotism, especially when the descendant is less skilled or not talented at all. Com’ on, mercy on us! We’ve had enough with nepotism on politics! Fault No2.
The production was made by Terry Date (Metal Church, Fifth Angel, Sanctuary, Panter, Overkill, Korn etc.) and it may be less heavy and punchy but it has a more raw overall sound. I think that “Enslaved” had a better production. Not a plus here neither a minor.
Finally, the songwriting formula is so predictable, generic and overdone (by Max) that it’s become somewhat tiresome at long last. Certain song structures, the same rhythms, bland melodies and pointless aggressiveness. This is not Fault No3 but the absolute Massive Fault! Max probably needs a break so as to relax and fill his batteries again. Just think that we could have a “new – one of the same” Soulfly album in a year from now with the exact tedious, uninspiring, monotonous & forgettable tracks… can you stand it? I can’t!!!
