Silent Voices
Reveal the Change
Inner Wound Recordings
2013
Silent Voices’ history dates back to 1995, when they were created by guitarist Timo Kauppinen (Isäntä Meidän), bassist Pasi Kauppinen (Sonata Arctica, Isäntä Meidän, Klingenberg Syndrome, Winterborn etc.), keyboardist Henrik Klingenberg (Sonata Arctica, Elias Viljanen, Klingenberg Syndrome, Mental Care Foundation,) & drummer Jukka-Pekka Koivisto (ex-Immortal Souls, ex-Isäntä Meidän). In 2002, they released their first full-length album, “Chapters of Tragedy”, in 2004 their second “Infernal” and the third one, “Building up the Apathy” in 2006. They took a big break for about 7 years and they return with a new album now.
The vocals on the album have been handled by a bunch of well-known singers such as: Mats Leven (ex-Therion, ex-Yngwie Malmsteen), Tony Kakko (Sonata Arctica), Mike Vescera (ex-Loudness, ex-Yngwie Malmsteen), Mike DiMeo (ex-Riot, ex-Masterplan) and Teemu Koskela (Winterborn). Quite striking huh? The band’s music moves on heavy/power metal paths with various prog & melodic metal passages. The album was recorded and mixed at Studio57 (Sonata Arctica, Revolution Renaissance) in Alaveteli, Finland and mastered by Ted Jensen (Bon Jovi, Ghost, Megadeth) at Sterling Sound, New York, NY. The production is tight & full.
“Reveal the Change” is an album that will remind you of Mastrerplan, Edguy & Sontata Artcica at times, especially on the track where Tony sings, and has a rather balanced heavy/power prog & melodic orientation. I do not quite fancy the lengthy tracks they have on the album. Why’s that? Why does every band have to release long tracks today? To prove what?! Progressive music does not necessarily include long and boring tracks. Do away with it! Anyhow, the album is rather satisfactory with some fine tracks like: “The Fear of Emptiness”, “No Turning Back” & “Burning Shine”. Overall, I think it lacks consistency and I believe that more tracks not lengthy ones could have worked for their own benefit. Do give it a chance cuz’ the performances are very pleasing in the main.
