Sepultura
Roorback
SPV/Steamhammer
2003
The last album I listened to from Sepultura was “Roots”. After this great but also strange album I didn’t have the chance to follow the band because I had never been a very die-hard fan of the group and the opinions I heard about their last two albums were a bit mixed. The only good thing I used to hear, from almost everyone, was about the vocals of their new singer Derrick Green. Now that I had the chance to listen to their new album, Derrick’s vocals impressed me a lot. I know that deep in the fans’ hearts, Max Cavalera will always be the best singer for this band but this is something that Derrick seems to understand very well and I think that he doesn’t care; he wants to be free and do his job as efficiently as he can.
The songs are extremely powerful and I think that Sepultura have made a return to their past sound and that’s not necessarily a bad thing because they have achieved the best mix that they could. I admit that I didn’t expect anything better from Sepultura after “Roots” and Max’s walkout. Now I’m glad that they show signs of recovery and I can assure you that Sepultura can, - and let’s hope they will - offer us many great albums in the future to come.
The production of the album was once again made in Brazil at the AR Studios and it’s very tough, heavy and clear. During the recordings, they also searched for a new contract to release the album as they had left Roadrunner. Finally, they signed with SPV and they are very glad because as the members said, SPV’s people have a vision for Sepultura. The tracks, which are going to shake you up, are: “Come Back Alive”, “Godless” and “Apes of God”. I think the fans of the group will be quite pleased with “Roorback”.
