Who would have thought that Sepultura would end up being a shadow of what they used to be! Who would have foreseen the band’s ruthless future? It’s so sad to see a band that you once loved and followed becoming so wretched! I honestly cannot tell why they continue as Sepultura. They could have continued making “this incredible music” they make today with so many different names instead of molesting Sepultura’s corpse. I know it’s been already 15 years since Max Cavalera left them but the band never managed to overcome his departure. Moreover, after Igor’s departure things became even worse!

I’m gonna try and review this album without having in mind that this is a Sepultura album. Andreas Kisser & Paulo Jr. have made a huge mistake going on as they spoil the band’s history. First of all, let me say that there’s a new drummer on the band’s ranks. The young (only 22 years old) but gifted Eloy Casagrande (Aclla, ex-Andre Matos). Secondly, there’s also a guest appearance by their “prior rival” Dave Lombardo on “Obsessed”. Again who would have believed that Lombardo would appear on a Sepultura album (yeah I know that this band ain’t Sepultura!), especially after the “stupid opposition” their fans used to have in the early 90s!

Anyway, the album with this very long & “silly title” is inspired by the 1927 film Metropolis but without being a concept album or what. The production is rather heavy, vigorous & modern as it has been done by the well-known producer Ross Robinson (Korn, At the Drive-In, Glassjaw, The Blood Brothers, Repeater, Slipknot etc.) who has also worked with the band on “Roots” previously. There’s also a cover on the “tribal” “Da Lama ao Caos” (originally by Chico Science & Nação Zumbi) where Andreas has taken over the vocals.

So far so good… but do not ask me about the music here. Well, there’s not a single riff, solo, melodic line that’s listenable or at least mediocre. Everything about this album is so insipid, boring & uninspired! Yeah, the album is heavy, brutal & “fuzzy” at times but that can only cause you a headache and nothing more. It’s not that Green is a bad vocalist (for this kind of music right?). After all, they had a solid album with Green on vocals and that was “Roorback” which was released 10 years ago. It’s that Sepultura, and specifically the two original members, Andreas & Paulo, have lost their magic touch. The whole thing has slipped of their hands. They cannot control it. I was writing about how awful is the new Soulfly is the other day, but Sepultura managed to overwhelm it! Ohh shit! That’s actually petrifying!! Anyhow, there are only two ways for Sepultura to follow. Either they get their shit together and reunite with Max & Igor and make an album worthy of their history, or they call it a day and form a new band where they can continue doing their shit. It’s so simple. I refuse to see this album as a “Sepultura” album for several elementary reasons. I have the right to do so, for I’ve been a fan since their “Arise” era… and I loathe what they have become today.
