September Code was formed in 2002 and in the years since then they have come up with three albums and had some lineup changes, ie original singer Loukas Panourgias was replace by singer/guitarist Dim Koskinas, with whom the next two albums were recorded and so on, but that didn’t entirely change their identity which was a little in flux from the go

2016 marks the release of their third effort, that’s characterized by persistent beats and some vocals that try to balance between cool/poppy and aggressive/emotional, sometimes more successfully than others. Despite utilizing a proven team of recording and mastering engineers, the end result can at times sound a little cold, clinical and “plastic” and the way some words are pronounced is exaggerated, vowel wise, betraying the band’s roots quite blatantly. And the singer’s voice vaguely reminds me of Sakis Rouvas, which is not exactly meant to be a compliment! Think Haken of late, with douches of Earthside and bits of Porcupine tree, only even more lethargic and not as well produced.

“Self Crisis” and “Blank” are two songs that avoid sounding completely formulaic, but within the overall muffled sound, they don’t help the band or the album shine. Only for young impressionable YouTube prog snobs.
