Seamount - IV: Earthmother

Well the story is more or less known to most of you. Seamount is the brainchild of the German guitarist Tim Schmidt and the American singer Phil Swanson.3, which took shape back in 2007. As the Latin number on the album title states, this is the fourth studio work of the band in almost 5 years.

Even though I’m not a great doom metal fan, I can tell that I prefer this music approach over the slow, long, heavy & tedious doom tunes which make you look at the clock every once in a while… just to know when your torture will be over. As natural, Black Sabbath’s spirit is all over the place, but the guys have also embellished their music with some doom, blues & hard rock features of Rainbow, Deep Purple, Saint Vitus, Pentagram and Witchfinder General (that’s why they have also done such a good cover on “Music”) among others. Take the self-titled song “Earthmother” for instance… which is entirely haunted by Richie. Seamount know exactly what they like & how to deliver it. Gratefully the production follows the same sense, without being over-polished, it is rather “thick” rockin’ & tight.

I was a bit skeptical before I listened to the album, but now after a few spins I’m getting into it with enough gratitude. As Phil said, this is the first concept record of the band. It was inspired by a couple of friends of his that changed his point of view over life, love & positive things overall. Phil also stated that although the album acts like a spiritual storyline on the surface, if you replace the idea of faith & religion with “love” and God with the one you love, then you can read between the lines. I’m sure that thing needs several intense spins. It’s true though, that “IV: Earthmother” has a lot to offer both musically & lyrically.

This album is not only addressing the doom metal fans but also those that like rock music with an 80s mood along with doom, atmospheric, numinous, blues & hard rockin’ passages. Were I to give you a hint about the whole album with only a song… I would choose to play “Echoes”… once you listen to it, you’ll get my point of view. You’re gonna have a great time while listening to this enjoyable doomy & rockin’ album…
