Saboter
Mankind is Damned
Witches Brew
2016
Saboter is a brand newcomer from Athens, Greece that was formed out of the ashes of the thrash metal band Overcast in 2014. Saboter has almost nothing to do with the previous band, as they are into the heavy metal music of the 80s with some speed/power/thrash elements here & there.
The band released a homonymous EP in 2015, which featured 5 tracks and now, almost a year later; they come back with their debut full-length album entitled “Mankind is Damned”, which features 8 new tracks. Saboter seem to fancy the metal music of the 80s and bands like Judas Priest, Jag Panzer, Warlord, Riot, Omen, Sanctuary, Heavy Load and so on. Then again who doesn’t like the abovementioned bands and who doesn’t own some (if not all) of their albums?! The guys of my age were “literally” raised with these bands and these bands will always mean a great deal to us no matter what! It’s incredible that the 80s metal flame is still alive and that there are bands like Saboter which honor their roots come what may.
The songwriting, the guitars, the rhythm section as well as the great vocals by Antonis Vailas will take you back to an era when metal music was pure, true & heavy! The production is also very good, without being “retro” intensively just for the “trend”. The guys have released 3 official videos for “Purifier”, “Impaler” & “Prevailing Dictators”. Certainly, this is something that we do not see a lot these days even by bigger bands and this means that you can always do things your way, if you try hard.
“Mankind is Damned” is a straightforward, dynamic, heavy, old-school metal album with fine melodies and great performances. Do keep in mind that this is only the beginning and I’m really looking forward to seeing how Saboter will evolve over the years. The first sample is truly enjoyable and well-made, so if you’re into 80s heavy metal music, do give it a spin and go for it…
