PTSD
A Sense of Decay
My Kingdom Music
2013
PTSD is an alternative metal band from Grottammare, Italy. Influenced by bands like 30 Seconds To Mars and Breaking Benjamin, PTSD were formed in 2005 and in 2008 they released their first album entitled “Burepolom”. Now that it’s 2013, it was time for them to release their second one called “A Sense of Decay”. Personally, I would have been fine if they hadn’t.
PTSD stand for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. I think that it’s a most fitting name for this band because that is exactly what I seem to suffer from every time I listen to “A Sense of Decay”. What we have here is a perfect example of bad mixing. Throughout the whole album, almost every time the chorus started and/or the song got louder, everything became just noise. I mean, the guitar, the bass and the vocals get so massed up together that it’s close to impossible to tell any of them apart. I heard “A Sense of Decay” from beginning to end twice with headphones on, and both times that resulted in my getting a headache.
Apart from the mangled, mashed-up sound, I have the feeling that most the songs themselves have no structure. I’m talking about abrupt, unnecessary and completely out of time and place changes in the pitch, the tempo and the mood of the songs. It is as if PTSD are making it up as they go along, something that makes listening to the record even harder.
Every song from “A Sense of Decay” has good parts in it, but none of them is good as a complete musical composition. As for “Heavy on My Heart”… it is a cover of a well known Anastacia song, and therefore it’s a song that has a beginning, a middle and an end.
