Poisonblack
Lyijy
Warner Music Finland
2013
What started out as Ville’s side-project turned out to be his full-time and beloved band through the years. The Sentenced’s disband played a major role on that. Don’t fail to recall that Poisonblack’s debut came in 2003… a year after the classic Sentenced “The Cold White Light”! I still think that this album (“Escapexstacy”) is Posionblack’s finest moment to date. It also featured the great J.P. Leppäluoto (ex-Charon, Harmaja, Northern Kings) on vocals.
Back to 2013… and “Lyijy” showcases all those elements that have made the band what it is over the years. Gothic metal, hard rock & roll & hard & heavy music is what Poisonblack is all about. Probably the album is more uplifting since the majority of the tracks are up-tempo and not so dark or cold as Sentenced used to be. Ville seems to be in a good shape. I really missed his Sentenced music days, too bad the band doesn’t exist anymore. The production is freakin’ powerful & punchy. Jonas Olsson (The Ocean, Callisto, Elin Blom, Automatic Eye, Deep Insight, Superscar, etc.) has delivered another great production.
Whereas “Lyijy” is a decent album, it’s somehow inadequate. You see there’s nothing new here and nothing that hasn’t been done (even by the same band) better in the past. It’s a fine album to listen to any time of the day but it leaves a great deal to be desired after a while. Nonetheless, there are pleasurable tracks on “Lyijy” like: “Maybe Life is Not for Everyone”, “The Halfway Bar” (Sentenced’s ghost is alive!) & “Them Walls” & “Elämän Kevät” (which means “The Spring of Life”)…
