My Own Ghost is a female newcomer from Luxembourg, formed in 2013. Almost a year later, the band released its debut album entitled “Love Kills”. Some may argue that they rushed to put out an album while others may say they did it right on time. Personally, I think that since they had material for a full-length album they did well to release it.

Musically, My Own Ghost are trying to blend various sounds and styles. They are into modern pop-rock music but they have features from the alternative rock, the electro-rock and the gothic rock (fewer) music too. They seem to be in love with what Evanescence achieved once upon a time… even though their fame & fortune burned out like a candle in the wind. The vocalist Julie Rodesch (Providers, Seven Days On Fire) has a fine voice and the whole band plays satisfactorily. The band first recorded and mixed their stuff on their own till they delivered it on the experienced hands of Markus Teske (Vanden Plas, Symphony X, Spock’s Beard, etc.) from Bazement Studio in Germany and Patrick Rondat (Elegy, ex-Red Circuit, etc.), who also recorded the drums and executed an additional mix and mastering. The final result is extremely good, especially for a newcomer.

Since this is the band’s debut album, they will learn many things from their mistakes which will help them in the future. Firstly, you do not put 13 tracks on your debut and deliver an album which lasts around 55 minutes! There’s always a possibility to bore the listeners and that won’t be good for the band eventually. Secondly, they need to find exactly their sound and style but this is likely to happen with many rehearsals, shows and recordings in the future. Thirdly the songwriting must be more cohesive and the melodies more memorable. The antagonism in the music field is very harsh these days so any band must do the best they can and evolve little by little if they want to have a chance in today’s music jungle…
