During the 15 years of their existence, the Swiss Morrigu have gone through several changes. Now with the release of their third full-length album, the band has moved on musically too. Sevi (ex-Eluveitie) is again the band’s voice and the live drummer Christoph is now a permanent member.

Those who remember the band’s previous album “The Niobium Sky” will find themselves shocked or surprised… you pick the word that describes the band’s music style more accurately. Morrigu are a modern extreme metal band with lots of hardcore elements… not metalcore exactly, but close to that… even if some groove metal and thrash/death passages are still there. If you do not believe me just listen to the track below and make up your mind.

Although I’m not into that modern, extreme, groovy and core thing… I can respect any band which tries out new things and likes to move on musically even though that might cost them eventually. I would prefer more musical variety, cuz the tracks are all more or less in the same style but that’s how the modern heavy/metalcore/extreme style of our time is. The production is quite modern, heavy and dynamic. The album was recorded at the Ghost Sound Studios, mixed by Chris “Zeuss” Harris (Hatebreed, Shadows Fall, Madball, Soulfly, etc.) and mastered by Jens Bogren (Paradise Lost, Katatonia, Opeth, etc.).

Certainly, Morrigu addresses a different music audience nowadays. I do not know how their old fans will take this music change, but I’m sure some will be pleasantly surprised and others unpleasantly. Personally, I prefer the band’s old sound, but who really knows what their next album will be like, huh?!
