Montage is a newcomer which started out in 2011 and comes from Helsinki, Finland. They band consists of young guys but they have all had previous experience in the rock/metal scene of their homeland.
Montage started working on their debut album with the producer Matias Melleri in 2012. They claim to be influenced by acts like: The Doors, Rush, Caravan, Mastodon and Black Mountain. That ain’t misleading at all… but I think they have a simpler and more straightforward songwriting than the above-mentioned bands. The classic rock, psychedelic, pop-rock, 70s rock in general influences are obvious as well as their sound which has a vintage feeling largely.
The singer has one of those voices that you either fancy or despise. I think his high-pitched vocals- even though they are OK- do not offer anything to the band’s music in general. A singer must take the band a level higher with his voice… but then again that’s my perspective. Musically, Montage are way more interesting than others, although they need to mature and break free from the barriers of their influences. For instance, the melodic solo on “Strawberry Skies” is fine but it’s “borrowed”. Anyhow, this is just the band’s debut which will give them a chance to play in various gigs so as to get ready for their next step…
