Mistur debuted back in 2009 with “Attende”, and now some seven years later, they are back with their new album, “In Memoriam”. Featuring a couple of members of Vreid and having existed for way more than a decade, these guys are in a viking/black sort of style of extreme metal, which is however quite melodic and traditional in its approach, with lots of musicality, mainly manifesting through the keyboard melodies but also through the entire soundscapes. The songs are more epic and complex and I guess somewhat longer than on the debut averaging on nine or so minutes or more… with some going as far as fifteen or so, but not veering of aimlessly but instead with fair use of structures and progressions that don’t sound forced and unnatural.

Despite the line-up changes with a new vocalist in Oliver Oien and new drummer Tomas Myklebust coming in the band and a label switch, Mistur seem to be as strong as ever and not withering for all of those changes. They could possibly appeal to melodic “deathly” or viking metal fans ie Amon Amarth, Insomnium and Manegarm but they are decidedly a little harder edged with all those Blackened elements…

Worth checking out and not lacking musically in a sub-genre that can come across as pretty stale and barren in several cases with little desire to break away from certain clichés and norms…
