Lucifer’s Child
The Wiccan
Dark Essence Records
2015
Lucifer’s Child is a newcomer which started in 2013 by the guitarist George Emmanuel (ex-Rotting Christ, ex-Chaostar) and the bassist Stathis Ridis (Nightfall). The guys also work with vocalist Marios Dupont and drummer Nick Vell. Judging by the background of George & Stathis, it ain’t hard to guess the kind of music they play.
So (Greek) black metal it is with various thrash, heavy, doom & atmospheric elements. And I say Greek cuz it has a rather strong influence by Rotting Christ on the whole. The Greek black metal scene used to be my beloved scene compared to all the others back in the day and it has influenced numerous other acts over the world. The production is heavy & powerful as on all the Greek black metal bands in comparison, let’s say, to the Scandi ones which have a more chaotic & not very heavy (a bit “shitty” too - in a good way) sound.
“The Wiccan” is a heavy, aggressive, dark, diabolical, atmospheric black metal album. Still, it does not manage to get rid of the Greek black metal clichés and RC influences (among others) come in mind every so often. I do fancy the atmospheric doom metal elements on the last two tracks (“Lucifer’s Child” and “Doom”), which clearly add a bit variety to the whole outcome.
Certainly, the guys know this kind of music very well and they do have in mind how to proceed from now on. “The Wiccan” is a decent black metal album, which could have been somewhat more interesting if they had followed the formula they used on the two last tracks, but there’s plenty of time for them to find their personal style and add various different ingredients to their music.
