Three years after “diin”, the release of the band’s third studio work “amaran” has come. The new drummer Ask Ty Arctander (Kampfar) has added some new elements to the band and he has also given them more power overall, but the band’s music hasn’t changed dramatically… or to set it straight, it picks up from where they left off with their previous album. But this time the atmospheric and the experimental parts may be a tad more than before.

Krakow has a rather distinct sound and that amalgam of post-metal, experimental, atmospheric, sludge metal, drone and extreme music surely cannot appeal to many listeners. It’s not bad or something but it’s rather “weird” and “abnormal” in a way. Assuredly, it’s not for all the parts of the day and it won’t cheer you up when you push “play”. It just needs its time and place… a fairly dark place deep in the heart of the night. The production has been done, again, by producer Iver Sandøy (Trinacria, Emmerhoff & The Melancholy Baies, Manngard etc.) and it’s “raw” and tight.

Perhaps their followers will find this album better than the previous one and will also see a bit different side of the band as well. It may also bring a few “weirdos” on board too. Personally I’m not keen on such music, but I didn’t mind spending some time listening to a couple of moody “strange” and “eccentric” gloomy tracks such as “Pendulum” and “Ten Silent Circles”. I hope they follow the atmospheric music path of the latter track. Still, it’s a better album than the previous one but it needs that “weird ‘X’ factor to go further…
