Kingdom Come
Outlier
SPV/Steamhammer
2013
Kingdom Come is a “sole case” since the day it was formed and a beloved band among the rock/metal fans. You see Lenny Wolf’s vocals have always given ‘em a specific texture and along with their catchy hooks they made Kingdom Come a very respectful part of the hard rock scene.
From the moment I saw the new video and listened to the song “God Does Not Sing Our Song”, I was expecting something actually strong from the band. I do like the aforementioned song and I think it’s one of the best tune Kingdom Come have come up with in the last decade or more. “Outlier” is the band’s new studio work in 4 years, since the 2009’s “Magnified”. Lenny Wolf has taken care of the whole album. He recorded all instruments, he engineered, mixed, produced and also mastered the CD. The lead guitars were written by Eric Förster. As you can see this album has been a one man’s project. The production is indeed very good and has a contemporary vibe. Some of the tracks are having a kinda “modern” approach and generally Lenny does try out something different here. Certainly, this CD also features some “classic” KC tunes such as the lead single “God Does Not Sing Our Song”. The too trance-like “Rough Ride Ralleye” does sound OK at times but certainly it is not a song that you could expect from KC.
I believe the basic issue with “Outlier” is the uneven songwriting. There are a couple of very good songs while the other fall into mediocrity or below and tend to make the listening of the album rather dull eventually. I think that the shortage of several strong tunes had their toll on this album. Maybe Lenny would need a partner or a band to share his ideas and work them together so as to come up with better results… or maybe not. I’m not satisfied with this album but I will play “God Does Not Sing Our Song” quite often as it is a stand out track on the whole. I just wish there were more songs like that on the album. This song alone saves the album not to fall into the absolute averageness!
