Helion Prime is a US quartet that plays sci-fi inspired power metal, (ie their name comes from the “Chronicles of Riddick” universe). Releasing a debut EP as a duo, only to make up the numbers for the release of this their debut full-length, with a full lineup now.
While Michele has a decent voice, she doesn’t seem to be too high reaching instead opting for some quite tame vocals. The guitars are sharp and melodic, but they too lack a bit in flair. It’s hard to really figure out a direct comparison, but I suppose they do sound a bit like Star One or Ayreon (during their migrator times) if that project was more power metal and people who like stuff like Gloryhammer, but without the ridiculous vocals might like them. The whole recording and mix – employing home recordings, leaves a bit to be desired, with the instrumental mix being clear enough but not as solid or powerful as it could be…
If you’re into the nerd culture and sci-fi, you might get an extra kick, but as far as proper power metal, I’m guessing it can be done a bit better. Worthy effort however and they could evolve into something interesting in the future.
