Heimdall is one of the “old” Italian power metal bands that started around the same time with Rhapsody and helped the whole thing become more popular along the country. Therefore, after a 9-year hiatus they’re back with a new album. Their last album was released in 2004, so we must see what has happened in the band’s camp all these years.

First of all, only two original members are left in the band, the guitarists Fabio Calluori & Carmelo Claps. Of course, this album marks the return of the original drummer Nicolas Calluori for one more time so let’s make the original members three. There’s a new vocalist, Gandolfo Ferro, a new bassist, Daniele Pastore, and a new third guitarist, Umberto Parisi (Magnolia, ex-Nameless Crime, ex-Endorphine). That’s the renewed band’s line-up.

Musically, Heimdall, do what they love to do and have always done. Power metal with Rhapsody references, epic moments, choirs, sympho-prog features and melodic parts. It can’t be clearer than that. This one is for the hungry European power metal fans that can’t get enough of this music. The production is very dynamic and rich. It was recorded at the Sonic Temple Studio and mastered by Achim Koehler (Primal Fear, Sinner). Lyrically, this is a concept album and as the title declares, it is based on Virgil’s epic poem entitled “Aeneid”. Furthermore, this is a very dark & strong epic poem, influenced by the Lord of all Poems, Homer.

The music is very well orchestrated and every little detail has been taken under consideration in order to present Virgil’s epic Poem in the best possible way. Surely, this is an album that you will relish if you play it again and again and follow the concept story. It may not avoid the genre’s platitude but, I think, the power metal devotees will fully enjoy it.
