That was quite a “journey” back in the early 90s! It evoked several nice memories and left me with a bittersweet taste. But first let me introduce you to the Spanish newcomers Graveyard of Souls. Their love for the early 90s atmospheric doom/death metal music is more than profound. Thus, they decided to move in that specific music path.

Elements from Tiamat (“Clouds” era), Paradise Lost (“Shades of Gods” era), Crematory (“Illusions” era), Lake of Tears & Rotting Christ among others can be found in the band’s music while the production also follows that same 90s style. It’s rather “loosen” and not very tight or polished. Atmospheric keys, harsh vocals, heavy mid-tempo (mostly) guitar riffs… generally, they’ve built up a very “nostalgic” atmosphere.

Certainly for a guy of my time this would sound rather “wistful” and good but what about the younger fans… what would they think about it? Well, I do not know but I can tell that they won’t go crazy over it. You see that time has long gone, most of the newer fans won’t even know its existence as the aforementioned bands became successful and known worldwide after those “extreme yet melodic and atmospheric” albums. I think that “Shadows of Life” is a solid album, even though I do not fancy the cover on Tears for Fears’ “Mad World”. I just hope they also add elements of our time in their next album… but the last word lies with them of course…
