Funeral For A Friend
Chapter and Verse
Distiller Records
2015
I’m still trying to figure out which music style is the worst! Metalcore or post-hardcore? Definitely those bands which are into the post-hardcore thing try to be somewhat “mellower” and more melodic… but most times the final result is at best confusing not to say hilarious!
Funeral For A Friend have been going on since 2001 and “Chapter and Verse” is their 7th studio album. They surely have their loyal fan base that follows them no matter what, so they are not afraid to “try out new things”. Let’s do not go crazy with the “new things” line though. I also fancy when I read some comments by their fans who say that this song/album is a grower and they sure gonna like it at the very end! OK… it’s a “grower” then! Does the word “grower” describe the album’s music complexity and/or the high level of the music performances?!! If yes (WTF?!!!) it does need time to get into it. If not then probably by using the word “grower” the fans probably mean they do not like it that much (or at all) but they will keep listening to it till they like it no matter what! And that’s how a die-hard fan should be like! It’s impossible not to like your favorite band’s new album and it’s also unthinkable for your beloved band not to have delivered a “glorious” album once again! What is the thing you do not get?!!
The production is a tad “raw” and straightforward. Perhaps this is due to the fact that this is the band’s first album after 2007 which has been produced by another guy (Lewis Johns) rather than their usual collaborator Romesh. Musically, this is what I call “back to the basics” without any hard to get parts – that need time to grow on the listener. “Chapter and Verse” is one of those uninspired, dull and boring albums that some will regret the time they lost over them (something that you cannot take back – shit!) and a few others will wait forever and a day for the songs to “grow” on them… just choose your side and proceed…
