Evil Invaders
Pulses of Pleasure
Napalm Records
2015
Evil Invaders have been around for some 8 years now; however “Pulses” is their debut, full length after an EP a couple of years earlier. They indulge in a fast paced, metalli-thrash, style, that’s not dissimilar, to early Enforcer, Skullfist and similar bands, with maybe the vocals being a bit darker, but equally demented. The whole vibe is also not too dissimilar to the first two Slayer albums, although, the sound is not a perfect match. Vocalist Joe has this bizarre Arayan, style but often launches in loud piercing screams, half of his singing actually ends up in such squeals, which lends the songs a bit of paranoia...
He’s all over the place and uncontrollable, on those squeals, but then again that matches, the whole, fast riff, fast and simple leads and generally raw, character of the band’s music... that will probably also remind you of a worse version of early Exciter, with bits of some other metal maniacs and a bit more dirt musically, tail in something like Whiplash, but not vocally. A more all over the place Exciter, would be an apt description I guess.
Without being surprisingly original, they are fairly pleasant and worth a listen, more than some spandex wearing “weekend warriors” from the North.
“Fast, Loud ‘n’ Rude” sets the pace for a lot of the songs to follow with relentless drumming, razorblade riffs, and over the top vocal histrionics... the only thing, that’s not too evident in this old school goodness is bass, it’s there, and you can hear it, but it’s too dry and the overall sound feels a bit on the treble side of things...
“Pulses of Pleasure” has an intro that’s slower and Sabbat’esque, but still, things go back to fast and quite furious for much of the duration of the song, but in a slightly more controllable way.
“Eclipse of the Mind” is more of the same with an interchangeably good riff and again a rather fast pace… the vocals are more on the vitriolic side, with those psychotic screams, being all prevalent.
I’ve no idea if “Siren”, has to do with the female, man eating demon women or just the apparatus, but Joe positively sounds like one, during the chorus… on this highly melodious, infectious and more “measured” number that wins extra points for its clever guitar ideas.
“Stairway to Insanity” is typical speed metal, with the thrash element almost flying out of the window. Nice riffing, speed, vitriolic vocals and breakneck drumming – all check.
“Shot to Paradise” returns to the albums earlier, somewhat darker and thrashier style and does that in style.
“Venom” is probably no tribute to the Geordie, black metal gods, but it says “it’s good”, (so it can’t be Cronos’ outfit hahaha) and it’s a somewhat slower number, almost down to mid-tempo, with the occasional burst…
Last but not least is the duo of “Blinded” a two minute atmospheric intro to “Master of Illusion” easily the most involved and technical composition on the album, which has this Maidenesque atmosphere, with both riffs and themes paying a bit of a tribute to the brits. This is definitely a cleaner, a lot more focused and measured track, which is not bad, at all. Overall an interesting proposition from Belgium, for people that like their metal fast and dirty.
