Dion Bayman
Don’t Look Down
Independent Release
2016
Dion Bayman is an Australian dude that is a one-man music production machine. He’s so far produced 3 albums, including this one and his style is an easy to listen to pop/rock that seems to draw inspiration from a variety of bands. I can hear a bit of Inxs, Duran Duran, Matchbox Twenty, Bon Jovi, Keith Urban, Richard Marx and Bryan Adams to name just a few.
Being a self-produced affair, it lacks a bit in the sound department with a mix that’s too clean, almost a bit sterile, which is a little sad, since the songs would gain a lot more spontaneity and volume, if he had done this as a band with real musicians.
But despite all its shortcomings, “Don’t Look Down” is an overall pleasant affair with a number of songs with airplay potential, which at least according to Dion is the case in his native Australia. I guess that if you like melodic pop/rock you can’t go wrong with this little number, but on the other hand, I think there’s room for improvement and Dion hasn’t still reached his pinnacle. Maybe soon…
