Diary of Secrets is a metal band from Thessaloniki, Greece and they have just released their debut album with the same name. According to their Facebook page, they are influenced by Metallica, Deep Purple, Megadeth, Scorpions, Europe, Sabaton, Nightrage, Firewind, Black Sabbath, Trivium, Gamma Ray, Helloween, Edguy, Iron Maiden and Judas Priest. In other words, their sound has not made the transition to the 21st century.
“Diary Of Secrets” is a clean-cut old-school metal album, with all the positive and the negative things this entails. The positive aspects of an old-school metal album is that you get exactly what you expect, therefore fans of that specific sound (who are probably of a certain age) can enjoy a new album that “speaks their language”. The negative aspect is that no one else is likely to pay any attention to it. Personally, I think that even those old “original metal-heads” I mentioned before are not going to love this album either. Not because it’s bad, but because it’s not good enough. The guitar riffs are poor, the hooks are nonexistent and there’s no specific groove to any of the songs.
Believe me, I take no pleasure in trashing a record. I understand that a lot of people have probably worked hard in the production of any given album, but there really isn’t much more to say about “Diary of Secrets”. It’s highly predictable, not rocking enough and, at times, kinda boring.
