Damian Wilson
Built for Fighting
Blacklake
2016
No one can fault Threshold and Headspace’s frontman Damian Wilson, or call him lazy as he seems to be keeping busy, almost always with interesting projects, be it, his “day job” bands or guest spots on other people’s projects, where he’s moonlighting.
A new solo album “Built for Fighting” was recently released, after an almost 10 years or more hiatus from solo releasing. It’s pretty typical of the singer/songwriter style of his previous work with which it falls pretty much in line with. Using a group of talented musicians, including Bill Shanley (Ray Davies), Lee Pomeroy (Jeff Lynne’s ELO, Take That), Adam Wakeman (Ozzy Osbourne, Black Sabbath) and Brian Willoughby (The Strawbs). Damian recorded “Built for Fighting” in a variety of studios and had it mixed and mastered in Sweden by the Fascination Street duo Jens Bogren and Tony Lindgren, who have worked with acts such as Opeth, Devin Townsend & Haken, but also handled Taylor Swift’s latest live album.
Despite having a variety of inputs, the resulting album is a cohesive album made up of 11 originals and a cover of Depeche Mode’s “Somebody”. Leadoff single “Thrill Me” is poppy and upbeat, while other songs, like “Impossible”, “I Won’t Blame Life” etc., cover a variety of emotional states…
“Build For Fighting” is an original and heartfelt album that will most certainly appeal all fans of Wilson… the Wilson that I like best out of the two big Prog dudes…
