The Brain Washing Machine has been a band for seven years before releasing their first full length album unimaginably entitled “Seven Years Later”. They come from Padova, Italy and they play a kind of hard/heavy rock type thing. After listening to the whole album 3-4 times there’s not much I can say about it. It’s OK, I guess. Not bad, but not anything to write home about.

Personally, I think its biggest drawback is the singer’s voice and his way of singing. While the rest of the band are pretty tight and rocking, the dude in front of the mic sounds to be trying a little too hard and this did put me off a little. A perfect illustration can be found at the beginning of “Broken Minds Opera” where he tries to sound playful and ironic. As for the music, all 12 tracks there are quite decent, but not one of them has any sort of originality. Maybe I’m getting too old, but if you’ve heard 10 other similar bands and artists you realize that The Brain Washing Machine have absolutely nothing new to contribute to the genre. Sure, their music is fun, lighthearted and everything, but you get the feeling that you’ve heard it all before. Also, their songs sound very alike in a way. Take the introductions to “Angry Boy” and “Seven” for example and tell me they aren’t both a little too similar. By the way, these guys must be huge David Fincher fans since they have two tracks named after his movies (“The Game” and “Seven”).

So… I don’t know… You can buy “Seven Years Later” if you want (like I said, it’s decent), but I bet it will never take a place amongst your favourite albums. If I had to guess though, I’d say that The Brain Washing Machine might be a good live band. I mean their songs (unoriginal as they may be) are ideal to be played live, so if these guys are able to put on an enjoyable show I’d pay to see it.
