Black Map performs at the Viper Room

Black Map released their debut single and video “I’m Just the Driver” in November 2013 and took to performing select dates to support the new effort, including opening for Kill Devil Hill, the band formed by former Pantera bass player Rex Brown. Black Map features members of other popular bands uniting to create something unique that appeals to the genre that has supported the artists in their former works.

The trio includes The Trophy Fire multi-instrumentalist - vocalist and guitarist Ben Flanagan on vocals and bass guitar in this line-up, FAR drummer Chris Robyn and guitarist of the band Dredge, Mark Engles. Bringing together riffs from tunes the band thought were a “little too dark” for their other projects, they have recorded a new 4 song EP to capture the new direction.

The current show schedule of the band is in support of the EP release titled “Driver.” The independent four-song CD, officially released in February of 2014, is available through their Bandcamp page here. The track “Gold” showcases the tightly played rhythms that the band is known for and blends a modern rock feel with straightforward lyrics that inspire as well as entertain. The 3rd song on the EP titled “Head for the Hills” implements a studio mix worthy of playing alongside latter year Beatles singles and track 4 titled “Ropes” is worthy of airplay on any KROC broadcast. For just $4, fans can download the EP in virtually any digital format while showing support for the band.

Frontman Ben Flannagan shares: “When we started it was really just about getting into a room and seeing what would happen, so to come to this point where we have something out there seems to be moving people, it’s a really good feeling”.

Guitarist Mark Engles states that this new band will offer no negative effect on Dredge, as the band plans to tour in April and May of 2014 in Europe. The Trophy Fire will be in studio working on new music for a later release and FAR, while not at all broken up, has nothing scheduled at the moment, but fans have the added bonus of Black Map to enjoy until new things come about.
