Steve Lukather is a great guitarist and musician. I think none can say otherwise. He has given us, specifically with Toto, some “classic rock” songs throughout the years and he has also influenced a good many musicians and bands out there. His new solo album, which is entitled “Transition”, finds him out of a dark era in his personal life and, I believe that all those strong feelings and situations, he’s been through, have given him additional food for thought and creativity. Thus, it is a fitting title I guess.

Fairly, I was a bit afraid of what I was gonna hear, but after I played the album for more than a couple of times, I started getting Steve’s point of view. At least I tried so. Steve has teamed up with the well-known keyboardist, producer, songwriter C. J. Vanston in order to write & produce this album. C.J. has given more than a helping hand here, as he has co-written almost every tune on “Transition” and also produced, engineered and mixed the album. The production sounds like a million bucks! What a clear & excellent sound on the whole!

Steve offers pop, AOR, rock, blues, jazz, instrumental, atmospheric, soft-rock & ballad music on this album. The performances are all wonderful in every part. He may not be a great voice – after all he’s a guitarist – but he does sing with passion and he sounds decent. There are several tunes to lap up here such as: “Judgment Day”, “Once Again” (truly wonderful song), “Right the Wrong”, “Transition” (with the enchanting second half), “Do I Stand Alone” & “Smile” (the second instrumental after the homonymous one). “Transition” is a very good album in general… much better than I was expecting it to be and I’m glad about that. It seems that even at certain “dark times” a few gifted musicians like Steve can be creative.
