The Reticent
Le Temps Detruit Tout
Heaven and Hell Records
2012
Four years after his sophomore release… the multi-instrumentalist, composer & singer Chris “Mordrid” Hathcock, the only member behind The Reticent… is back with his third work. Moving a step further into the sentimental & atmospheric side of progressive music & “borrowing” elements from Opeth, Tool, Anathema, A Perfect Circle, Riverside, Porcupine Tree, Katatonia, Soen, Neurosis, Steve Von Till & Terry Reid inter alia… he adds his own musical insanity, presenting something quite moody yet emotional & esoteric.
Based on acoustic guitars as well as on heavier bursts at times, dramatic performances and gloomy atmospheric backgrounds… Chris does respect the music legacy of the aforementioned bands… even though he’s not afraid to experiment a bit further when he feels so. The production is pretty good, tight & clear… though a sound closer to “Alternative 4” would have added that little extra to the final outcome generally. The a cappella “With Folded Arms” surprises nicely with all the voices that are used to create an intense atmosphere as well as the very “bizarre” & glum cover of REM’s “Losing My Religion”. Other favorites are: “In Pursuit Of Redemption”, “Mutually Assured Destruction”, “Lie To Me” & “Le Tenia”.
I like how Chris blends his influences and paints his own music works… but I utterly think that a fully - active - (he gives live shows with a full band) group… would have worked effectively on his music in the very end. I believe that a band can eventually deliver better results than individual musicians. “Le Temps Detruit Tout” does leave a good taste and I’ll keep an eye on them in the future…
